Boats

NCBC has a small, but perfectly formed, fleet of boats. Whilst a lot of training takes place in the eights (both the Lent and May Bumps, our main competitions of the year, are raced in eights), the smaller boats see a lot of use as our rowers seek to improve their skills and the four is often raced in Fairbairns at the end of the Michaelmas term.

We work hard to maintain the boats and keep them in tip-top condition, whilst also seeking to ensure that the fleet is kept up to date through the purchase of new boats and sale of old ones when required.

Our newest VIII, the "Millicent Garrett Fawcett", was purchased in 2018 with thanks to a donation from one of our alumnae, Catherine Bell (NC 1964), former President of CUWBC and matched by funding from the JCR equipment fund. The naming ceremony took place early in the Easter term, with a speech by Dr Emma Mawdsley, Fellow of the College, Director of the Margaret Anstee Centre and Senior Treasurer of the Boat Club. The name was chosen to celebrate the 100th anniversary year of the first women gaining the right to vote. Photos from "Millie's" Boat Naming Ceremony can be found here.
